Things you might want to ask us.

How do I care for my moss bowl?

Preserved moss is maintenance free. It doesn’t require water or exposure to light. It repels dust so it will maintain its fresh, vibrant appearance for years without any help from you. The preservation process keeps its structure and shape.

How long does preserved moss last?

In the right conditions, with moderate temperature and humidity and away from direct sunlight, preserved moss can last for over ten years.

Do I need to water it?

No, you should never water preserved moss. It gets all the moisture it needs from the air. Watering will make your moss mouldy and bring about decay eventually causing the structure to break down. Don’t be tempted to spray it either.

How do I keep it clean?

For all the attractive properties of preserved moss, there’s one thing it doesn’t attract: dust. One of the benefits of removing water during the preservation process is that it reduces static – the mild electrical charge that causes dust to settle on live plants. So you should never need to dust your moss bowl. If you ever need to remove crumbs or other debris from the surface of the moss, use a very soft brush. Never turn the bowl upside down or shake it as you could dislodge the moss balls.

Can I place it outside?

Unlike live moss, which thrives in dark, damp environments such as forests, preserved moss should only be kept indoors. Prolonged exposure to rain, sun and extreme temperatures will eventually make your moss lose its lustre.

Is it a living plant?

No, preserved moss is not living and will not grow. The beautiful display you buy should retain its appearance for many years to come.

Why don’t you sell live moss

Live moss requires a completely different set of conditions and more maintenance than its preserved cousin. Live moss thrives in moist environments with high humidity. It can be grown indoors in a terrarium or suitable container. Live moss can last for months or even years, but it requires plenty of TLC and is less than ideal for creating displays.

Is my moss glued into the bowl?

No, we avoid using all unnecessary chemicals, including glue. We pack the moss carefully in the bowl, using its natural springiness and the contours of the bowl to hold everything in place. That’s why you should never turn the bowl upside down or shake it. Your display will also last longer if it’s out of reach of tiny, curious hands.

Does my moss need light?

Live plants need sunlight for photosynthesis, the process which converts light into energy for growth. Because preserved moss is no longer alive, it doesn’t need sunlight. In fact, you should avoid placing your moss bowl in direct sunlight as it will become too dry and the colour could fade.

What’s the right temperature?

Preserved moss likes any room that’s comfortable for humans. It won’t enjoy too much warmth, so keep it away from fires, radiators and any other direct heat source.

What about humidity?

Although moss has most of its water removed during the preservation process, it continues to need some moisture to maintain its springy feel and vibrant appearance. Preserved moss absorbs moisture from the air and prefers humidity in the 40% to 60% range. That’s the humidity of every room in a typical house, so no need to break out the hygrometer.

What are the health benefits?

Preserved moss walls offer several health benefits beyond aesthetics. They can improve air quality by absorbing pollutants and releasing oxygen, reduce stress and anxiety, and enhance sound absorption, creating a more peaceful environment. Preserved moss also promotes well-being by bringing nature indoors and improving focus, and can even increase recovery rates from illness.

What are the health risks?

Preserved moss is generally considered safe and non-toxic for indoor use, making it a good option for decoration. The preservation process involves natural, non-toxic materials. The moss itself is also non-toxic, though eating it is not recommended. Because pollen is removed during preservation, it is highly unlikely to cause an allergic reaction.

Is it sustainably sourced?

We buy only cultivated moss, which is specially grown for decorative use. We use suppliers who use natural methods of cultivation and who follow sustainable practices. For example, all our moss is hand-picked. Rotational cropping methods encourage regeneration. As moss is easy to grow in natural habitats, very little energy is used in its cultivation.
